The National Referees Committee of the Guyana Football Federation in conjunction with the Guyana Football Referees Council successfully completed a Beginners Referees Course in Linden last Saturday and Sunday, at the Mackenzie Sports Club, Upper Demerara.
A total of 6 persons including 4 females started the two-day Course, but only 5 completed with all the participants being successful.
Topping the class was Female Corporal Maurees Skeete of the Guyana Defence Force who gained 82% and she was followed by 18 year-old Kevin Stephens of Wisburg Secondary School with 76%, while the other successful participants were former junior athlete Shonette Mc Farlane, a student of IDCE, female basketball player 17 year-old Mackenzie High School student Minnifia Fox and 14 year-old Christiansburg/Wismar Multilateral Secondary School Shannon Griffith, also an athlete.
The fitness run came off as planned and the Upper Demerara Referees took to the streets and ran from the MSC Sports Club to the 5th corner then up Republic Avenue to the Band Stand, before returning to the MSC ground.
The first person to complete the run in 8.58 minutes was FIFA Assistant Referee Abdullah Hamid and he was followed closely by another FIFA Assistant Referee Rollin Tappin who did it in 9 minutes.
Another Referee Stanley Lancaster came next in a time of 9.20 minutes followed by Franklyn Brisport Luke in a time of 10.05 minutes with Lindley Langhorne in 10.25 minutes and Felix Inniss in 10.30 minutes and lone female Assistant Referee Runada Floris in a time of 14.05 minutes bringing up the rear.
The next Beginners’ course will be held in Essequibo during the period Saturday, May 23 and Sunday, May 24, 2009 and it will be conducted by Referee Instructor & Assessor Lawrence Griffith.
Courses are also slated for West Demerara, East Coast Demerara, Bartica, East Bank, and Lethem. Georgetown and Berbice held courses earlier in the year.
