The Cavaliers Sports and Tour Club (CSTC) has planned a series of competitions to commemorate Guyana’s 43rd Independence Anniversary, starting with a 15-lap race walk around Melanie Damishana on Sunday.
The race commences at the old complex site, around the perimeters of the village and back to its place of origin. This event will precede the 10-lap junior race around the Soesdyke Circuit on Sunday May 24.
The ‘Clash of Champions’ race walk will be staged on Tuesday May 26 from the University of Guyana Campus, Turkeyen, west along the Railway Embankment and south to the National Cultural Centre.
Subsequently, race walkers will travel to Linden on Sunday May 31, for a race starting at the Bayroc Recreational Centre; proceed along the Winifred Gaskin Highway and into Burnham Drive, before culminating at the Christianburg Sports Ground.
Competitors would vie for honours in the male and female, seniors, juniors, veterans and differently able categories. Trophies and other prizes donated by corporate Guyana would be at stake for the top finishers.
Meanwhile, national race walk champion, Rudolph Mitchell, out-walked a field of fierce competition, including Jonathon Fagundes and Jeremy Cornelius to capture the Rotary Club of Georgetown 10K event around the inner circuit of the National Park on Sunday last. Fagundes and Cornelius occupied the second and third positions respectively.
Donna Ramkissoon of Soesdyke, captured the female title ahead of Marlin Messiah and Keisha Baptiste respectively.
In the veteran’s category, Harold Debidyal strode in ahead of Maurice Fagundes, the only other participant in this category. Glayson Ralph walked unchallenged as he was the lone competitor in the junior category.
President of the Rotary Club of Georgetown, Mr. Aubrey Roberts called for a wider level of participation even as he urged current participants to work assiduously in the continued development of the sport. President of the Guyana Olympic Association (GOA), K. A. Juman Yassin, was also present at the occasion and issued similar sentiments.
