The team to represent Guyana at the 3rd Annual Caribbean Islands Bench Press and Powerlifting Championships set for Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands from May 14–16, left the country yesterday.
The team comprises of strongmen, ‘Big’ John Edwards, Mervin ‘Spongy’ Moses and Randolph Morgan along with Guyana Powerlifting Federation President Peter Green.
Green is attending the NAPF Congress to finalise arrangements with regard to Development Assistance and the 4th Annual Bench Press and Caribbean Championships which Guyana has been selected to host April 2010.
Moses is competing in the 75kg class, Morgan 82.5kg and Edwards the 125kg category.
Edwards and Moses heralded a successful return by Guyana to regional powerlifting in June, 2008 in Aruba and are hoping along with Morgan to impress and make Guyana proud.
The team departed still slightly short of cash, however, two business houses gave last minute support to the team, for which they expressed a big thank you. Nafras Boutique and Singh’s Electronics store were the pair who lent tangible support to the lifters.
The boutique donated tracksuits for the team, while Singh’s gave cash support.
The strongmen expressed readiness for the task ahead and from indications in the gym they are expected to make a good representation for their country. Edwards and Moses impressed in 2008 and are set to continue that trend while Morgan is determined to make his mark in the regional arena.
