Public-spirited residents of the Foulis/Paradise area on the East Coast of Demerara yesterday handed over a man to the police whom they said had attempted to rape an 11-year-old girl.
The man was pursued by the residents to the back of the Dazzell Housing Scheme, Paradise after the child raised an alarm when he attempted to pull her into an abandoned house in the neighbouring village of Foulis.
Police say the man appears to be of unsound mind. Residents are adamant that the man would have sexually assaulted the child if he had succeeded in getting her into the house without anyone seeing him.
This newspaper was informed that around 16:00 hours the child was making her way along the Enmore Old Road on the border of Foulis when the man who is believed to have been occupying an abandoned house in the area attempted to grab her.
A male resident who heard the child’s screams went to her assistance.
“After he scramble de girl, me start run behind he. He run till he reach at de back of Dazzell and plenty people come out and catch he,” the resident told this newspaper.
At the time the suspect was only half dressed.
Kaieteur News understands that the man was given a sound thrashing and then handed over to the police. Police sources told this newspaper that the accused is refusing to say anything about the incident.
Residents had initially believed that the man was the prime suspect in a number of sexual attacks on females in that section of the East Coast of Demerara.
However, police were able to dispel those beliefs.
Police at the Enmore Police Outpost where the man is being held are awaiting the advice of their superiors before proceeding further with the matter.
