Dear Editor,
Standard high school biology text holds that evolution is a theory and that mutation may be one of its mechanisms.
Adaptation, variation, natural selection and such likes are observable phenomena in nature, a definitive proof for evolution (changing it from theory to fact) lies in finding a demonstration in nature that involves the actions of these phenomena in turning out more complex systems/specie.
In this search scientist are especially looking for transcendent physical changes in nature, backward and sideways movement are considered too commonplace, they can even be troublesome for the theory. Transcendent changes from lower to higher states are rarer and they are the most important speculations in Darwinism because they attempt to account for the startling continuum of life on the planet across the vast expanse of the geological time scale. Indeed these are the speculations that really popularize the theory, particularly in human evolution.
For instant if the viruses were weakening nobody would have said anything about evolution, but because they are getting stronger (transcending) scientists are grabbing at the opportunity to shout evolution – these are the rare changes that could mean proof. The independent actions of these phenomena mentioned earlier (the components of the theory) do indeed produce changes in nature and this can more aptly be called horizontal evolution, variation/mutation etc within the species, this is what we might be seeing in virus; there is no need to prove this.
However in Darwinism these components also supposedly work together to produce transcendent changes or vertical evolution, this though is unproven, and is at the core of what makes Darwinism a theory.
We know that the theory caters for sideways and backward movements or horizontal evolution, but in the search for proof we are looking for upward movements. It is on this point that Darwin’s system begins to collapse for want of evidence. The evolution hypest makes a lot of noise every time he sees the components at work without truly understanding what should be looked for.
However, it is against this background I would like to say that my position on viral evolution remains the same as was stated in my first letter. An extension to it would see me focusing on the fundamental premise of evolution; how the non-living becomes living but that may be too lengthy for a letter column.
The hypest is no different from the creationist in that he (hypest) turns the theory of evolution into his religion.
Dogmatism, frivolity and even arrogance have dogged the course of the centuries-old, science-faith discourses and as such this may well be my final contribution on this matter.
