NEW AMSTERDAM, BERBICE – As residents of Angoy’s Avenue and its environs continue to fear a man now known as the ‘Bogey Man’, police in Berbice have intensified their actions with the hope of catching the said person.
According to a source from the Guyana Police Force, they have not received any formal reports or solid evidence of any existence of a ‘Bogey Man’.
It appears that any suspicious person is now deemed the ‘Bogey Man’.
Starting yesterday, ranks from the Central Police Station in New Amsterdam visited Angoy’s Avenue to question persons at random to see if any information can be gathered to substantiate the allegations.
A number of calls were received from residents in connection with his existence. On May 11, and the next day, police responded to calls from residents.
Based on this, ranks visited the location on Wednesday where an attack was alleged to have taken place and arrested a man.
He was questioned and subsequently released since his version of the incident supported what the caller told the police.
It was said that in the initial complaint, a female called the Central Police Station in New Amsterdam and reported that a man assaulted a young lady.
When the suspect was detained and questioned, he denied this, and told police he had asked the woman if she had credit in her mobile phone. He further claimed that he went his way after she said she did not.
The female who was supposed to be the victim endorsed what the suspect said. But she added that she became afraid when two passersby told her to run because the man was the ‘Bogey Man’. Based on this she raised an alarm.
Police further stated that there are no reports of persons being robbed or raped but they have heard the allegations.
According to a source, around 2004 there were reports of persons being raped in the vicinity of the Region Six Democratic Council office but no one was ever caught.
The ‘Bogey Man’ is said to be living with AIDS and is reportedly raping men and women, and robbing them.
One woman who requested anonymity claimed that she was almost raped but managed to fight him off and fled for her life. The man, she said, took away her chain but she never reported the matter to the police. “I ain’t want people think I got AIDS…Let he go with the chain.”
There were earlier reports that the man would be seen in the vicinity of the Region Six Democratic Council office waiting to prey on passers by.
Recent reports suggest that he has since re-located to the Angoy’s Avenue area in New Amsterdam.
