A man who was initially charged with attempted murder, yesterday appeared in court, and had the charge withdrawn and two new charges instituted.
The man, Navendra Anand Dinoo, had appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court following the charge for the attempted murder of Vickey Navendra Lall.
However, yesterday, the case was called again, and the accused was informed that the attempted murder charge would be withdrawn and he would be read two charges.
The court was told by the prosecution that the Director of Public Prosecutions, after reviewing the matter, recommended that the attempted murder charge be dropped.
The new charges that were recommended are assault causing actual bodily harm and throwing a destructive substance.
The first charge read that on Saturday, October 11, 2008, Dinoo threw a destructive substance on Lall, with intent to maim or disfigure.
It is also alleged that on the same date, Dinoo assaulted Lall causing him actual bodily harm. To both charges he pleaded not guilty. He was represented by Defence Counsel Bernard De Santos who asked the court that since his client was granted bail for the attempted murder charge if the same bail can be transferred to the two new charges.
The Magistrate then granted the defenses’ request and the bail for the attempted murder charge was transferred to the two new charges.
Lall was granted $300,000 bail and is expected to make his next court appearance on June 22, at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
