‘Same script, different cast’ and so it was at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall Tuesday night, as enthusiasts watched the clinical demolition of Supply/Soesdyke and East Ruimveldt in the continuation of the Inter-Ward Basketball competition.
With services of national centre, Dwayne ‘Sugar’ Roberts from Linden and the swingman Alwyn Bellamy, Albouystown/Charlestown disposed of Supply 7041 in the first game at the renowned venue, leaving the opposition helpless.
Roberts scored 19 points along with 13 rebounds for a doubledouble while Bellamy had 13 points and seven rebounds that led on both the offensive and defensive ends. Marvis Williams pitched in with 13 points for the winners.
The trend of the tournament’s leading teams getting off to slow starts continued when the opposing Supply side remained in the game up to halftime. The team was down 2833 at the half, as the game slipped away in the third period.
Dellon Gurrick top scored with 13 points for Supply who were placed in a precarious position after going down 3653 at the end of the penultimate period. The fourth quarter more or less became a lime and drinks break for patrons.
In a strategic and confident move, Plaisance/Vryheid’s Lust not only went to Berbice for its guest player, forward Flynn Hinds, but they also restricted captain Stephon Gillis to the bench until the second and decisive half of the game.
Hinds tormented the unrated East and West Ruimveldt team in the paint while Joseph had major minutes and he made it count. The two players, along with Ryan Gullen and Hugh Arthur, were the exfactors for Plaisance in the first half.
The composed Plaisance team played well within its ability and executed clinically when on the offensive. The team had an obvious problem with defence but their role players were far more superior to the slow East team.
After enjoying the lead throughout the first half, where they held a 38-33 advantage at halftime, East’s Marlon Rodrigues, after nailing a threepoint jumper, found his way to the basket with a penetration to equalise at 43 points.
The third quarter hope helped renewed the competitiveness of the game but by the end of the same period, Plaisance were up 5749 after a 146 run in the final five minutes of the penultimate quarter as the fourth became mere convention.
Gillis came on after the first half with one thing in mind – to shoot the ball at a compelling percentage from his favoured threepoint range. The national shooting guard’s big shots helped Plaisance to an emphatic 8461 point triumph.
Gullen scored 21 points and had eight rebounds, while Gillis had 17 points to support his seven rebounds. East’s Kester Gomes led on offence for the team with 15 points while Warren Oudkerk and Rodrigues had 11 points each.
The competition continues tonight at the same venue when Tucville/Guyhoc challenge Alberttown/Bourda in the feature encounter, and Herstelling/Grove play South Ruimveldt in the first game scheduled to begin at 7pm.
The winner of the competition takes home a whopping $500,000 and the White Castle Fish Shop trophy. Second place gets the Humphrey Bakerysponsored trophy and $300,000 while the third place cannons $100,000 in cash. Curtains and Drapes Design sponsors the third place trophy while fourth place receives $50,000 and the Kevin Reflections trophy. Fusion Audio will entertain guests at the venue on game nights while female patrons are free before 8pm.
