Dear Editor,
I learnt that the ‘National Rights of the Child’ commissioners were duly sworn in by His Excellency, the President of the Republic of Guyana.
Highest encomiums and congratulations to the Head of State are deserving and in order.
This commendable effort intended to help secure the well-being of our precious resource our children has come at a good time.
I was, however, deeply saddened and surprised when told by a friend that no men were on the Commission.
Society stands in peril if it ignores the pivotal role males need play in the process to produce a. morally solid society, with wholesome families, communities and country.
Surely we could have found a man who has been a good core giver, a successful father and a respected citizen, a sort of role model.
A male personality to add lustre and credit to this important body – this is a serious unacceptable defect – all respect to the ladies identified.
Enpassant, I recall this anecdote – An American Congressman became quite irritated by the dictum of a celibate Priest while they were debating issues related to marriage and the bringing up of children – he quipped “Him no play the game no make the rules”. Is anyone listening?
