Guyana Water Inc (GWI), in response to an article in Kaieteur News which stated that the residents of Zeelugt and Tuschen have been without water since last November, has indicated that GWI visited the affected area since the Tuschen Well which is more than fifty years old, failed.
According to the GWI, Minister of Housing and Water, Irfaan Ali, and a team of GWI officials visited the area and interacted with residents and outlined strategic interventions to offer immediate relief.
The temporary interventions instituted were sectionalized distribution where various sections of the community received water at specified times of the day, GWI contends. To support this effort, GWI also deployed seven 450-gallon tanks strategically located to support sectionalized delivery. In addition, a contractor delivers water to the affected areas via five black tanks on a daily basis.
“Residents must remember that water supply challenges in most communities are aggravated by persons who connect pumps directly to service connections and by those who waste or otherwise abuse the service.”
GWI also says that during periods of service interruptions, one must bear in mind that no water delivery system is designed to deliver water to all residents at the same time. As such everyone must play his part in conserving water.
“A recent visit to the area by GWI officials revealed that some customers have removed stop cocks from their service connections, thus contributing to pressure reductions and wastage. GWI has since reinstalled these devices to stem wastage and calls upon customers to desist from removing them.”
A permanent solution to the current situation has been on going since failure of the Tuschen well and GWI engineer have been working diligently to restore the ailing well with very encouraging results. The remedial works have been concluded and the well has recommenced operation over the past 48 hours.
This is just part of the overall investment plan valued at more than $1billion slated to bring permanent relief to residents and to improve levels of service.
The new Vergenoegen Well is soon to be commissioned and will serve to further boost supplies to the affected areas.
These interventions coupled with the Water Treatment Plants, system distribution and service upgrade form part of the macro development initiative of the government of Guyana to raise the general standards of living in the area.
Such programmes within the water sector complement the housing development drive.
