Ryan Rajmangal pulls during his defiant 59 in the national under-19 trial match at Police yesterday.
By Sean Devers
Jonathan Foo smashed a destructive unbeaten 91, while Ryan Rajmangal hit a dogged 59 before he was run out on the final day of the only National Under-19 three-day cricket trial, which ended at the Police ground yesterday.
Foo, who has played in the last two regional Under-19 tournaments, hit Rajendra Naikbarran for six to reach his 50 from 64 balls and then galloped to 91 in the next four overs with a vintage display of explosive power-hitting as Anthony Bramble’s XI reached 247-6 in their second innings when the match ended.
Scores:-Anthony Bramble’s X1 225 & 247-6, Royston Alkins’ X1 354-9 innings closed.
Resuming on 327-7, Alkins’s X1 quickly lost Dexter Solomon (16) and Amir Khan (6) leaving Keyron Fraser unbeaten on 20.
The left-handed Rajmangal batted responsibly and seemed well set for the second century of the trials before he was run out when Alex Amsterdam called for a sharp single. Rajmangal struck nine fours from 144 minutes and 136 balls.
Amsterdam (37) and Manoj Pooranauth (25) failed to build on good starts and were both removed by left-arm spinner Anthony Adams (2-23) to bring Foo to the crease in the closing stages of the contest.
Navin Singh (6) had earlier been removed by Seon Daniels and Quincy Ovid-Richardson (19) was bowled by Fraser as the first two wickets fell with the score on 26.
Foo, who was dropped before he had reach 50, provided late afternoon fireworks for the small crowd by smashing the National Under-17 pacer Daniels for three sixes and two fours in the final over of the day which cost 31 runs.
The national youth selectors informed that a 20-man squad should be announced today to prepare for this year’s regional Under-19 series in Jamaica from July 8 to August 6.
It was also announced that injured Guyana Under-19 left-hander Jeetendra Sookdeo, who will be out of action for two weeks due to a back injury, fast bowler Ronsford Beaten who missed the trial due to CXC exams and Guyana Under-19 opener Trevon Griffith, who is in Trinidad with the DCC team, were all eligible for selection. Sookdeo’s injury will be monitored and a final decision will be made on his selection to the touring party after he is medically evaluated.
Herrell Greene, who scored the only century in the trails, seems to have picked himself, while all of the nine players eligible from last year’s tournament should be included.
All five of the pacers invited to trials are full of potential and should be picked in the 20-man squad, including Beaton who bowled with genuine pace in the GTM Under-19 series.
Apart from leg-spinner Foo, none of the spinners, including National left-arm back-of-the-hand spinner Totaram Bishun, looked destructive in the GTM series or the trial match and this and the generally poor middle order batting, is a cause for concern.
Solomon, who was arguably the best young Keeper in Guyana up to a short time ago, seems to have regressed in both aspects of his game but, should be in the 20-man squad along with Bramble.
The probable 20-man squad:- Herrell Greene, Trevon Griffith, Ryan Rajmangal, Jeetendra Sookdeo, Alex Amsterdam, Seon Hetmyer, Jonathon Foo, Royston Alkins, Anthony Bramble, Rajendra Naikbarran, Sahadeo Somai, Dexter Solomon, Andre Stoll, Keon Joseph, Amir Khan, Anthony Adams, Totaram Bishun, Seon Daniels, Ronsford Beaton, Keyron Fraser. (Manoj Pooranauth if Sookdeo is unfit).
