After beating Merry Boys in their opening game on Monday night, DCC lost by four wickets to unbeaten Preysal yesterday in their second game in the West Indies Players Association (20/20) cricket tournament in Trinidad.
Christopher Barnwell top scored with 42 from 37 balls with 7 fours as DCC reached 144-7 off their allotted 20 overs, but only National Under-19 opener Trevon Griffith (31), guest player Deon Ferrier (23*) and Vice-Captain Travis Dowlin (21) of the other batsmen reached double figures as Shazan Babwah and Andre Browne took two wickets for the Trinidad team.
Man-of-the-Match Babwah returned to hit a 41-ball 55 with 8 fours and a six and along with Andy Jackson (24) and Kjorn Ottley (20) saw their team to 145-6 off 18.1 overs.
Preysal qualified for the next stage as the only unbeaten team in group ‘C’.
Merry Boys, Preysal and DCC are the teams in group ‘C’. The Winners of Group ‘A’ will play the runners-up of group ‘C’ today but up to late last night it was not clear if DCC or Merry Boys will go into action today against the Group ‘A’ winners.
DCC President Alfred Mentore told Kaieteur News that it was believed DCC had qualified as the group runner-up but added that the issue was being discussed at a meeting last night.
Once first match Man-of-the-Match Andrew Lyght Junior was removed by Yannick Ottley for nine at 36-1 and Leon Johnson was bowled for a duck four runs later, DCC were never really able to sustain a momentum although Barnwell offered fight on another easy-paced Guaracara Park track after DCC had won the toss.
Dowlin, who hit a four and six in his 17-ball 21, added 31 with Barnwell before Babwah got rid of Dowlin at 71-3 in the 12th over.
Derwin Christian (7) and Griffith, who batted at number six in the order, were both removed by Browne as the Guyanese slumped to 86-5 in the 15th over. Barnwell was removed by Kjorn Ottley and Babwah sent Denis Squires packing for one as DCC lost their way in sunny conditions.
Ferrier tried to increase the tempo towards the end of the innings with a cameo unbeaten 23 with 3 fours from 12 balls and had Vishal Arjune (1*) with him when the innings closed.
Yannick Ottley (6) was caught and bowled by Arjune who opened the bowling with Trevon Garraway with his off-spin to leave Preysal on 12-1.
However, it was always going to be an uphill battle to defend a sub-150 total on the fast outfield and Jackson and Babwah carried the score to 55 before Squires removed the left-handed Jackson in 6.1 overs.
After Kjorn Ottley was run out, Andre Browne (13) and Videsh Maharaj (6) fell to Ferrier and Barnwell respectively in the space of a run with one required to win, former Guyana left-handed batsman Azeemul Haniff (10 not out from 12 balls) and Aaron Alfred (0*) saw their team to victory.
