NCN suspends ‘Fuzzy’ Sattaur

Chief Executive Officer of the National Communications Network (NCN), Mohamed ‘Fuzzy’ Sattaur, has been suspended with immediate effect for failing to carry out a decision made by the Board of Directors.
However, he intends to ask the political directorate to review the suspension.
Kaieteur News understands that Sattaur’s suspension had to do with the fact he resisted the efforts of the board to re-hire radio producer Mazrul Bacchus. Sattaur had fired Bacchus two years ago.
This newspaper understands that the Board had intended to fill the void created by the death of veteran broadcaster, Ayube Hamid, in January, by hiring Bacchus. But Sattuar kept resisting those efforts.
He was handed the suspension letter at about 16:30 hrs yesterday afternoon. The letter cited him for “insubordination,” and he was asked to surrender the company car, which he did.
The suspension is for one month without pay, sources tell Kaieteur News.
Kaieteur News was told that earlier in the year, Sattaur had approached a senior government official to intervene since he was not happy with a decision that the board had taken but was reprimanded for his actions.
In the interim, Production Manager Martin Goolsarran and Editor-in-chief of NCN’s Six O’Clock News, Michael Gordon, will perform Sattaur’s functions as co-managers.
Goolsarran could not be contacted for comment, and when Kaieteur News did get on to Gordon, he said he’d rather not comment.
Kaieteur News understands that Sattaur was of the view that the process of hiring and firing staff was not a function of the Board of Directors and that they should not intervene in such matters.
Sattaur is currently seeking advice and intends to petition the powers that be to address the matter.
NCN’s ultimate head is President Bharrat Jagdeo, who holds the portfolio of Minister of Information.
