– Degenerates, Hikers ‘B’ clash to decide 2nd Div. champions
Hikers ‘A’ extended their lead in the men’s First Division Pool after a sound 10-4 thrashing of Western Dragons last Monday evening, as play in the Mr. Toppers Indoor Hockey Competition continued at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.
The result meant that they’ve become the first team to make it to the final of the Division and now await either the National side or GCC ‘A’, who have 9 and 7 points respectively.
Robert France continued to prove a menace for defenders, hammering in a helmet-trick. He was supported by a brace each from Devin Munroe and Timothy McIntosh, while singles from Randy Hope and Shane Samuels completed their tally.
Dragons’ response came through a Deon Carew double and a goal apiece from Donwes Austin and Trason Corbin.
In results of the other matches played: Hikers ‘B’ defeated Dragons ‘B’ 6-2 with the rapidly improving Shaquelle Assanah netting 4 goals, while Andrew Primo and Ryan Primo added one each. Donwes Austin and Damion Fraser were the marksmen for Dragons; GCC ‘A’ then beat Old Fort ‘A’ by a comfortable 5-2 margin with the in-form Dwayne Scott slamming in a double. Kevin Spencer, Orland Semple and Mark Sergeant were the other players on target for the winners.
For Old Fort ‘A’, John Abrahams continued his good showing in the tournament with a single strike along with Askofu Simon; the national ladies (Piranhas) then squeezed past a pesky Hikers unit 3-2 with Sonia Jardine, Trisha Woodroffe and Dominique DeGroot being the goal-scorers and in the final game of the night, the national men’s team pounded GCC ‘B’ 5-1.
Alex Gouveia, R. France, S. Samuels, K. Spencer and Jason DeSantos, all got their names on the score-sheet, while Raphael DeGroot made the lone response for the losers.
The national men’s team and GCC ‘A’ both chalked up victories, to keep themselves in striking distance for the second spot in the final.
The national ladies selection, the Piranhas, managed their first win of the tournament by sinking Hikers ladies to remain contenders for the final against GCC Tigers, while Carib Degenerates and Hikers ‘B’ have already secured their positions in the men’s Division 2 final.
It was a stroll in the park for the Hikers ‘A’ men as they dominated their match against Dragons ‘A’ who were noticeably missing a number of their First Division players.
The Hikers ladies succumbed to the deeper reserves of the Piranhas who had a full bench and an abundance of fresh legs to keep the pressure on for the duration of their clash. With Sonia Jardine netting the first penalty corner opportunity for the Piranhas in the 9th minute, Maria Munroe respond in like manner five minutes later taking the game into an even score line at the half.
Trisha Woodroffe gave the Piranhas their second lead from another well executed penalty corner flick four minutes into the second interval and Dominique DeGroot added to their lead in the 35th minute, following a swift counter-attack. The Hikers pulled within one again three minutes later through Amanda Garnette, but remained on the losing end at the final whistle.
The lone B division match of the evening saw the Hikers ‘B’ pull off a 6-2 win over the Dragons ‘B’.
The Hikers men have the maximum 12 points followed by the nationals on 9 points, GCC ‘A’ on 7, GCC ‘B’ with 5, Old Fort on 3 and cellar dwellers Dragons, yet to register a point.
