– National Cadets team to be selected
The Guyana Table Tennis Association is mulling participation in the French Table Tennis League for its senior male players, while a meeting is to be held shortly to identify players for the Cadet Championships in Barbados this August.
General Secretary of the Association, Godfrey Munroe told Kaieteur Sport yesterday that the French League in Cayenne, French Guiana was recognised to primarily continue the development of the senior male tennis players.
“I know for a fact that teams from Brazil, Martinique and Guadeloupe will participate as part of the resuscitation of the Netherlands and Antilles League. We want to expose our players to that circuit,” Munroe briefly explained.
The General Secretary said that while players such as Idi Lewis, Christopher Franklin and Colin France are confirmed for the event, seasoned–campaigner Mathew Khan’s status in the team is unknown for undisclosed reasons.
Munroe informed that France has been working with the players both mornings and afternoons for the past two weeks. He said that a departure date for those identified is yet to be established but that would be made public soon.
In addition, the GTTA will meet shortly to shortlist players for the Caribbean Cadet Championships slated for Barbados, August 15–21. Those players will undergo training with coach Linden Johnson.
Among those expected to make the cut are Chelsea Edghill, Priscilla Greaves and Andrea Wiltshire. The competition is for players below the age of 13. Edghill recently performed creditably at the junior championships in St Kitts. (Edison Jefford)
