Local athletes will vie for honours when the Ministry of Culture, Youth & Sports, in collaboration with the National Sports Commission, stages the 2009 Independence Anniversary Triathlon Race on Sunday May 17.
Event Coordinator, Ms Stephanie Fraser disclosed that this year’s action would be held in Region 3.
The action commences with a 5km swim from midstream off the Guy-America Sawmill area to Blake Beach. Competitors will then mount their cycles for a 25km ride out to the main road, east through Parika to Ana Catherina/Leonora. They would then dismount for the athletic race and journey east of Ana Catherina, through Leonora and Den Amstel and then return to the Uitvlugt Community Centre ground. The opening event commences at 12 noon.
Participants would compete in four categories – male and female junior – 17 years and under, and male and female senior –18 years and over. Athlete will carry identification numbers on their forearms and swim caps. The Guyana Amateur Swimming Association will donate the caps.
Trophies and cash prizes will be awarded to the first three ‘finishers’ in each category while several individual awards would be up for grabs.
All first place finishers would receive $35,000, while 2nd takes home $25,000 and third $15,000.
Sports Minister Dr. Frank Anthony will present the awards to the winners of the various categories, immediately after the close of the race at the Uitvlugt Community Centre ground.
Meanwhile, in an effort to preserve the safety of competitors, officials of the Guyana Amateur Swimming Association will closely monitor the swimming segment of the event, while Captain Cleo Da Silva of Roeden-Rust will provide the boats to facilitate their activities. The organisers have disclosed that one boat will chaperone at least three swimmers while another would be used for Emergency and Safety Officials. A medical team will also follow the entire course of the race.
Ranks from the Police Traffic Department, officials from the NSC as well as volunteers drawn from various sports associations will assist with the cycling and running course. Clearly indicated water stations would also be strategically placed along the course.
Presentation of awards will be done immediately after the close of the race at the Uitvlugt Community Centre ground.
Participants are also advised that a meeting will be held at the Guy-America Sawmill before the start of the swimming segment at 11.30 hours.
