The embarrassment suffered by a female football team that represented Guyana during the recently staged Inter-Guianas Games managed to stir some amount of controversy, as to who should take the blame for the poor performance by the lasses.
The margin of defeats in both matches against French Guiana and Suriname was so noticeable that sections of the media questioned how a national representative team could comprise members from only one section of the country even though it is widely known that Georgetown, Linden and the hinterland possess some of the best female footballers in the country.
The situation reached boiling point to the extent that both the Director of Sport Neil Kumar and President of the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) Colin Klass issued statements on who is really to be blamed for the fiasco.
Well, the good news is that if all goes well, this could be the last time that a national female team is picked without a wide representation from all areas where the game is played.
This is according to Klass, who informed Kaieteur Sport during a recent interview that the GFF intends to organise competitions in each of the regions, where the top teams to emerge, engage each other in a National League setup.
According to the GFF Head, the framework has already been drafted and is to be disseminated to the respective sub-associations shortly. “In each of the regions we will have a competition which will culminate with a National League among the top clubs,” Klass informed.
He said that at the moment the main constraint is the cost of travel and he will be approaching a few business entities with the aim of soliciting sponsorship to offset such expenses.
He went on to say that the staging of the National League is targeted for commencement by the beginning of the third quarter.
