Faced with a shortfall of cash to represent Guyana at the 3rd Annual Caribbean Islands Bench Press and Powerlifting Championships set for Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands from May 14–16, three local business entities have come to the rescue with financial assistance to the Guyana team.
Western Union, Rip X Energy Drink and the New Margarita Gift Shop made varying cash donations to assist in offsetting the cost of the trip.
Ms. Natheeah King made the presentation on behalf of Western Union, while Mr. Martin Brock represented and handed over the contribution for Rip X Energy Drink and Ms. Michele Chung on behalf of The New Margarita Gift Shop.
The strongmen, ‘Big’ John Edwards, Mervin ‘Spongy’ Moses and Randolph Morgan, are still somewhat behind in gathering funds and are still welcoming contributions.
Edwards and Moses heralded a successful return by Guyana to regional powerlifting in June, 2008 in Aruba and are hoping along with the rest of the team to make Guyana proud.
Moses is competing in the 75kg class, Morgan 82.5kg and Edwards the 125kg category.
The team will be managed by the Federation President Peter Green, who will also be attending the NAPF Congress to finalise arrangements with regard to Development Assistance and the 4th Annual Bench Press and Caribbean Championships which Guyana has been selected to host April 2010.
