The Joint Services yesterday launched its anti-crime campaign, “Operation Consolidation” along the East Coast of Demerara.
An army official said the campaign was intended to trap criminals, unearth guns, ammunition and illicit drugs.
The operation, which started shortly after 10:30 hrs began on the Lower East Coast area and was expected to end at Hope, East Coast Demerara.
According to a senior police official, although the security forces have broken the back of major criminal enterprises over the past year, there appears to be a resurgence of brazen criminal activities.
He pointed to the shooting of former Commissioner of Insurance and the recent slaying of Guyana Power and Light Inc. Chief Security Officer, Clifford Peters, which both occurred in broad daylight.
This is in addition to a number of robberies in and around the city.
“It looks as if the criminals want to reign again and the public is not too happy, so we decided to take this initiative to maintain the lid on crime,” the official told this newspaper.
Several persons were taken by surprise by the exercise and many motorists queried what had transpired yesterday that led to the massive operation along the East Coast.
According to the official members of the public should not be alarmed and they are asked to cooperate with the Joint Services so that they can exist is peace.
Operation consolidation commences at a time when the Guyana Police Force is playing host to the annual conference of the Association of Caribbean Commissioners of
Police which opens today at the Le Meridian Pegasus hotel.
The official said the campaign is likely to continue and is expected to be more extensive.
