Vivienne Munroe, nee Semple, the proud mother of two boys and one girl, strongly advocates the teaching of God-fearing principles in the home, exhorting parents to train their children in the way they should go, “and when they are old, they would not depart from it!”
All three of the Munroe children, who are now adults, attended the Mackenzie High School.
Michelle, the only girl, pursued and obtained a Degree in Law at the University of Guyana. The two boys, Jafaar and Amar, are pursuing careers in Occupational Safety and Banking respectively, in Monsterrat.
Vivienne said that a lot of the ills in society, today, are because certain principles and values are not being upheld in the homes, resulting in young people becoming more recalcitrant and disrespectful, having and showing no regard for authority.
Vivienne, who came from a single parent home, said she learnt a lot from her mother, who though she was a farmer, was a well-educated woman who sat and taught her children.
She admonishes more single parents to do the same, as children live what they learn. Parents, as a whole, should never be too busy to talk and share with their children.
“And we should move away from using books as “punishment”; telling our children to go and pick up your books! Instead we as parents should sit and help them with their assignments.”
Vivienne said that parents should not just sit back and depend on the teachers to do all the “work”, but to keep educating themselves, so that they themselves could in turn impart knowledge to their children.
The proprietrix of “ Nu- tec Variety Shop, Snackette and Catering Service, on Greenheart Street in Linden, Vivienne Munroe, was born in Essequibo.
She was educated in Georgetown, and became a pupil teacher at the Dolphin Government School, her alma mater at the tender age of fifteen. She later attended the Festival City Secondary School, which was later absorbed into the North Ruimveldt Secondary.
Vivienne came to Linden in 1981, and got married the same year, to Ian Munroe, whom she had met at the Cyril Potter College of Education.
She would teach at the Mackenzie Primary School for eight years, while her husband taught at the Mackenzie High School.
After retiring from teaching after fourteen years Vivienne and her husband established Nu-Tec Variety and Snackette on Cooperative Crescent, which was an electronics store that also sold snacks and did catering.
Always an entrepreneur at heart, Vivienne said that that was where she wanted to be; and she was soon cooking too, after customers started to request meals. “And that was how the business grew, as I would always try to please my customers by providing whatever they requested”.
Vivienne said she had found her niche, as food preparation is something she loves. She is also qualified in that area.
This venture also gives her the opportunity to continue teaching, though from a different vantage point, as she more or less affords her staff the opportunity of gaining hands on experience in the field of food preparation and catering.
The proud proprietrix said that the business was later moved to its present location, after the family bought the property on Greenheart Street.
“At present I cannot complain about business, because there is always a demand for our products, but the greatest challenge is capacity, as we need better and more modern equipment right now”.
She is a member of the Linden Chamber of Commerce, the Tourism Committee and the Women’s Welfare Committtee.
She was awarded last year for her invaluable service in the area of hospitality.
Her words of advice to parents are that they should not only look out for their own children, but also to look out for other people’s children.
Vivienne Munroe herself has always lived by this maxim!
