Record 40 runs conceded in Alves’ over
Guyana under-19 opener Jeetendra Sookdeo (112) and National batsman Steven Jacobs (106) hit centuries, while Troy Gonsalves of Police bagged 6-34 yesterday on the opening day of the latest round of the Cellink Plus two-day first division cricket competition for clubs in the City.
However, the highlight of the day was a record-breaking over from Transport Sports Club (TSC) medium pacer Stephen Alves which cost 40 runs; one more than the 39 conceded by GYO’s Jermaine Reynolds against DCC early last year.
The new record-breaking over for first division cricket in Guyana was made more eventful when Alves was taken off the attack for bowling two beamers as Jacobs took 28 runs from the bat to race to his fourth division one century.
His ton was decorated with six fours and eight sixes at the DCC ground to help Malteenoes to 300-7 declared.
National opener Shemroy Barrington (77) and Randy Lindore (41) supported Jacobs as off-spinner Kevin Ross (4-53) and Oslyn Batson (2-26) were the main wicket takers for TSC.
Former Guyana pacer Quincy Nedd (3-31) and national Under-19 fast bowler Seon Daniels (4-12) then rocked TSC to 55-7 by the close, still 145 runs away from avoiding the follow-on. Demerara Under-19 player Carl Rambharose is unbeaten on 14 and with him is Ross on six.
At Bourda, Sookdeo, recovering from a back injury, stroked eight fours and two sixes in his second hundred at this level and got support from Yannick Grimes (91) and Ricardo Jadunauth (56) as GCC reached 291-6 by the close replying the GDF’s paltry 62 all out.
Play started 40 minutes late because of the late arrival of the soldiers and only Vijay Singh (31) and Roger Arjune (10) reached double figures as five GDF batsmen registered ducks. Left-arm spinner Raj Nanan grabbed 4-10 while pacer Kevin Ogle took 3-18.
Demerara Under-19 left-hander Delon Fernandes (13) and Nanan (0) are the not out batsmen for GCC as Paul Castello has so far taken 4-95.
And in the other game yesterday, hosts Police were wobbling on 115-8 in reply to Everest’s 255-9 declared with Demerara Under-19 off-spinner Ricardo Devers (8) and medium pacer Dexter Southwell (0) at the crease.
Former national youth player Chris Patandin (52), Joseph Perry (52), Troy Gonsalves (44) and Dayanand Roopnarine (44) led Everest with the bat as Jason Heyliger (3-59) Devers (2-34) and Southwell (2-49) did the damage with the ball for the Cops. Demerara Under-19 left-arm pacer Andre Stoll took the other wicket to fall to bowlers.
Cecil Adams (38), Rawle Browne (25), and Vishal Jaigobin (16) offered token resistance for Police as Gonsalves (a former Guyana Under-19 leg-spinner) snatched 6-34 and got support from left-arm spinner Sauid Drepaul who took 2-36.
Today is the final day and play starts at 09:30hrs.
