Hikers “A” produced another dominant performance to out-duel GCC “B” by a 4-1 margin to remain unbeaten in the Men’s Division as the Mr. Toppers Indoor Hockey Tournament continued last Friday evening, at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.
On target for the winners was Robert France with a double, while Jerazeno Bell and Devin Munroe added the others. Chris Xavier made the lone response for GCC ‘B’.
The national Men’s team came from behind to squeeze past GCC “A” 7-6 and chalk up their first win of the tournament.
Both GCC ladies teams had a successful evening when its Tigers unit upstaged Hikers 3-2 and then the Spartans surprised the nationals, winning by a similar result to register their first victory.
Although seemingly the better side from the opening whistle, it took the Hikers men almost the entire first half to break the solid defence of the young GCC “B”.
France finally broke the deadlock in the 19th minute with a timely deflection and followed that up with a well placed shot just one minute later.
Just before the whistle sounded for the half, Bell converted a penalty corner high in the GCC net to increase his team’s advantage to three.
The second period was a fast-paced battle with both teams coming close to scoring on several occasions, but Hikers made another strike in the 26th minute with a quick shot from Captain Munroe, before the determined GCC “B” finally converted through the skilful Xavier just before the final whistle came.
GCC “A” racked up an early four-goal lead when they met the Nationals in an “A” division match.
However, the effects of the high-paced game took its toll on the Bourda Boys who lost their momentum allowing the nationals to claw back into contention and pull off a 7-6 victory.
Bell netted a hat-trick for the nationals and Shane Samuels a double, while John Abrahams and France scored one each.
For GCC ‘A’ Orland Semple and Dwayne Scott each scored two to go with one each from Kevin Spencer and Alan Fernandes.
In the final men’s “A” division clash, Old Fort “A” trampled Western Dragons 10 – 0 with four goals from ace striker Aderemi Simon, a hat-trick from Dwayne Alleyne, a double from Jason De Santos and solitary strike from Chris Low-Koan.
GCC Tigers never looked troubled in their ladies clash against the highly regarded Hikers as they amassed an easy two-goal lead by half time through two penalty corner conversions from Tiffany Solomon and Captain Sonia Jardine.
Jardine found the back of the nets again in the 22nd minute to take the game to 3-0.
Hikers made a late surge in the closing minutes, converting twice through Amanda Garnette and Cora Towler, but it came a little too late.
Earlier, in the evening Spartans registered an upset victory over the Piranhas in the other ladies clash with goals from Gabriella Xavier, Marzana Fiedtkou and Briawna Gordon. Ulrica Sutherland scored a double for the Piranhas.
In the men’s “B” division the Carib Degenerates steam-rolled their junior opposition, the Hikers “B” 3-0 with goals by Gregory Sills, Rawl Davson and Troy Peters. Western Dragons “B” hammered Old Fort “B” 4-0 in the other men’s “B” division clash of the night. Austin Downes, Leroy Carroll, Damion Fraser and Cove Bowman each scored one for the Dragons.
At the mid-point of the tournament, the Hikers men lead the men’s “A” division with 9 points, followed by the Nationals with 6 points, GCC “A” and “B” with 4, Old Fort “A” -3 and Western Dragons -0. The Carib Degenerates lead the men’s “B” division with 6 points followed by the Western Dragons and Hikers with 3 each and Old Fort still to earn points.
In the ladies division the GCC Tigers have secured 6 points while the GCC Spartans and the Hikers ladies have three each and the Piranhas round out the table on zero. Matches continue tomorrow from 18:00hrs as follows:
Hikers “B” vs Dragons Men’s 2nd division
GCC “A” vs Old Fort “A” Men’s 1st division
Dragons vs Hikers “A” Men’s first division
Hikers vs Piranhas Ladies
