The dynamics on the Inter–Ward Basketball Championship has evolved from the street to a developed franchise with all the tenets fit for the annals of history. That will not change tonight when some intense rivalries continue.
Basketball in Guyana is not short on swagger and if anyone thinks differently then echoes of Wortmanville’s national forward, Naylon Loncke and Melanie’s, Kayode Murray will definitely drowned out the doubts of pessimists.
The bottom line is that the talk is enough game to fuel on court engines as Wortmanville, a previous champion, comes up against a young Melanie unit tonight when the event continues at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.
Loncke said that he is ready and prepared while Murray indicated that he will take care of business in cross talk yesterday. The two seasoned players were yet to confirm their guest players but are definitely not worried over that fact.
“I don’t have a guest player yet. I am looking at [Royston] Crandon but I still have to tie up that arrangement,” Loncke told this newspaper yesterday afternoon. Crandon, who is a national point guard, will certainly be a factor.
In addition, former Courts Pacesetters forward and now United States–based, Mark Trotz will feature for Wortmanville. The former champions also have the high flying Royston Siland and Clement Brusche among their charges.
“We were all in the gym and I am confident because my team is stronger this year. I have more defensive players. I have a surprise guard from Linden that I will not reveal to the media until tomorrow night [tonight],” Loncke indicated.
On the other hand, Murray was not that optimistic. He stated that he is more concerned with the development of his young team and the exposure they will get tonight, but as a senior player, he vowed to represent his team.
“We are going to war. My team is together and is filled with young blood. It’s not about a single person; it’s not about me–I am putting this team out and I am looking at this as the development of basketball on the East Coast,” Murray said.
He informed that he is still to confirm his guest player with organiser Robert Cadogan but is confident that his young ‘gamesters’ will be able to give a good account. His important players include Winston Waddell and Drumson McCulley.
If that was not enough talk to rush patrons down to the Sports Hall tonight, Trevor Rose’s provocative comment that his Kitty and Campbellville team will dispose of any opposition should get Kwesi Roberts’ Agricola side on its nerve.
“We are the element of surprise. We are going to dispose of any team that steps to us and they [Agricola/Bagotstown] will just be the first. We are going to easily dispose of them,” Rose told Kaieteur Sport yesterday when contacted.
It is a pity that Roberts could not be reached yesterday for comment but Rose has named national centre from Linden’s Kings, Jason Alonzo as his guest player to join forces with guard Sheldon Braithwaite and forward Kevin Lawrence.
The winner of the competition takes home a whopping $500,000 and a White Castle Fish Shop trophy. Second place gets the Humphrey Bakery–sponsored trophy and $300,000 while the third place cannons $100,000 in cash.
Curtains and Drapes Design sponsors the third place trophy while fourth place receives $50,000 and a Kevin Reflections trophy. Fusion Audio will entertain guests at the venue on game nights following a 7:00pm commencement.
