– final decision likely tomorrow
An athletics developmental arrangement between the Guyana Olympic Association and a high performance training centre in Colorado Springs now hangs in the balance following new logistical revelations that must be considered.
President of the Athletic Association of Guyana (AAG), Colin Boyce told Kaieteur Sport yesterday that the local Olympic authority has to consider how it will get the participating athletes to qualify for the upcoming Caribbean Games.
The deal at the United States–based facility was aimed at getting the identified athletes in top shape for the Caribbean Games. Part of the arrangement was that these athletes must qualify for the prestigious regional competition.
However, Boyce is of the opinion that if those athletes leave Guyana around mid–May as was planned, they are left little time to make the required condition for the Games since its deadline for qualification closes June 11 at midnight.
“We overlooked the fact that we have to consider if there will be any meets in the US for these athletes to reach the qualification standards and at whose expense these athletes will attend those meets,” the AAG head told this newspaper.
Initially, distance athletes Kelvin Johnson, Cleveland Forde and Alika Morgan along with sprinter, Alisha Fortune were identified for the Colorado Springs stint but Rawle Greene and Lionel D’Andrade were later added as reserves.
Morgan has since suffered an ankle injury that threatened her eligibility for the stint while Johnson, Forde and D’Andrade have left for Trinidad and Tobago to continue preparation, whereas Greene and Fortune are to compete in Barbados.
It seems as though those athletes were already aware that the Colorado Springs exposure was in doubt and have therefore taken alternative measures to secure their qualification marks instead of waiting in futility on Colorado Springs.
“I am to have a meeting with [Juman] Yasin [Olympic Association President] on Monday (tomorrow) and a final decision will be made. We will look at whether to send them now or if we will wait until later like August,” Boyce said.
“There is reservation for us to attend at a later date. There is a stint for sprinters in August and one for field events athletes later in the year. We will tie up all the arrangements and then we will know exactly what is happening,” he continued.
Meanwhile, Boyce also revealed that the Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport, Dr. Frank Anthony is expected to be present at tomorrow’s meeting where the possibility of a tartan or synthetic track will be thoroughly discussed.
