– Pompey competes in Brazil this month
Guyanese athletes that are expected to use the Austin Sealy Track Classic in Barbados as a qualifier for the upcoming Caribbean Games will have to wait another week to compete at the event that was scheduled for this weekend.
The Athletics Association of Guyana has informed via correspondence that the meet that was set for today and tomorrow will now be held on May 16 and 17 beginning at 2:30 and 3 pm respectively in Barbados.
“We apologize for the inconvenience and look forward to your presence,” the document sent to the athletics association stated, adding that athletes’ new registration deadlines are today (regular entries) and May 12 (late entries).
Guyana’s premier senior athletes, Rawle Greene and Alisha Fortune are expected to run at the Austin Sealy meet with the aim of reaching the qualification standard in the 100m and 200m sprint events of the Caribbean Games.
Meanwhile, overseas–based international campaigner, Aliann Pompey continues to hone her striking season. Pompey, who placed second to Cuba’s Indira Terero in Guadeloupe last weekend, will compete again on May 17 in Brazil.
Many of Guyana’s top athletes are seeking overseas meets to qualify for the Caribbean’s prestigious track and field meet in July. With time running out on some of those athletes, only one or two chances become imperative.
