An unidentified man who chose the Police Traffic Headquarters at Eve Leary to steal a minibus windscreen succumbed at the Georgetown Hospital hours after he was shot by a police rank.
The man, who was shot in the upper left thigh, died of shock and haemorrhage around 07:00 hours yesterday while receiving medical attention.
Police in a press release stated that the man was seen earlier on Wednesday evening riding a bicycle in the vicinity of Traffic Headquarters.
He was subsequently seen leaving the Traffic Headquarters compound with a windscreen – that was later confirmed to have been taken off a minibus.
Ranks on duty challenged him and discharged a warning round into the air but the man dropped the windscreen ran away.
He was pursued by ranks, who eventually caught up with him at Anira Street, and during efforts to effect an arrest, shot him in the upper left thigh.
Eyewitnesses said that the man lay on the roadway for several minutes before he was taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital.
The stolen windscreen was recovered along with the bicycle, the latter in the Police Sports Club Ground, which is next to Traffic Headquarters.
According to the police, the man, about 30 years of age, 5’ 6″ in height, medium build, and dark complexion, was clad in a brown short pants and grey jersey.
His body is at the Georgetown Public Hospital Mortuary.
