Guyana’s Nicolette Fernandes did the Caribbean proud in her match Wednesday night despite going down to American opponent Latasha Khan ranked #33 in the world.
She won a tight first game then was leading 10-5 in the fourth, but a strong comeback from the American world #33 saw her save the game and go on to win the match 9/11, 14/12, 11/1, 11/5.
Nicolette very nearly had a commanding 2-0 lead and she showed that she’s again playing at the level of a top 30 world ranked player after a long layoff from injury. She won a lot of new fans with her gutsy performance.
Samantha Teran (Mex) advanced to the quarter-finals after winning 11/9, 8/11, 8/11, 11/7, 11/6 against Dominique Lloyd-Walter (Eng).
Jaclyn Hawkes (Nzl) beat Isabelle Stoehr (Fra) 11/7, 11/6, 11/4, Rachael Grinham (Aus) won 11/4, 11/9, 11/4 (22m) over Lisa Camilleri (Aus), Natalie Grinham (Ned) defeated Delia Arnold (Mas) 11/6, 11/6, 11/5, Kasey Brown (Aus) overcame Line Hansen (Den) 11/9, 11/8, 11/6 and Natalie Grainger (Usa) disposed of Latasha Khan (Usa) 5/11, 11/6, 11/7, 11/6 to all advance to the quarters.
