Play in the Ministry of Culture Youth and Sport Inter-Block Football tournament are currently underway at Beterverwagting (BV) on the East Coast and Grove on the East Bank of Demerara.
In latest results from BV, Triumph overcame the challenge of Backdam by a 2-0 margin when the teams met on Tuesday last at the BV Community Centre ground. Devon Williams and Devon Griffith were on target for the winners.
The tournament in the East Coast village continues tomorrow from 4:30pm at the same venue, with Triumph opposing Housing Scheme.
Triumph head the points table with six points and are assured of a place in the final set for May 16. Battling for the other spot in the final are Sideline and Backdam who each have five points. However, Sideline are enjoying a slight advantage with a plus 2 goal difference.
On the day of the final, four matches will be contested. The main attractions are the climax to the tournament along with the third place playoff, added to that is a male Under-15 encounter and a female match-up.
Over at Grove on the East Bank, Grove North defeated Caneville 3-1 with Teshawn Blackman scoring a double and Dominique Garnette finding the mark for the winners, while Benin Pilgrim replied for Caneville.
Grove South edged Samatta Point East 3-2. Travis Jones scored twice and Sherman Doris completed the tally for the winners, while Royston Adams and Claude Paul fought back for Samatta Point East.
In the other game played, Craig got the better of Samatta Point West 3-1. Devon Joseph hit a double and Mark Jhingoree one for Craig, while Marvin Blair replied for the losers.
This tournament continues Sunday with the start of the round robin playoff to determine the winner of the Grove tournament. The top three teams from the earlier rounds, Grove North, Grove South and Craig, are contesting the round robin with the top finisher of the trio being declared the winner.
