Hikers ‘A’ remain unbeaten

The in form Hikers ‘A’ men’s team produced another impressive performance by demolishing Old Fort ‘A’ 8 goals to 2 to place themselves at the top of the A division pool.
The two GCC men’s teams played to a 1-1 stalemate, while junior ladies the GCC Spartans suffered a 6-4 defeat at the hands of the seasoned Hikers.

The men’s national team secured their first win by trouncing the Western Dragons 5-2, as play in the Mr. Toppers Indoor Hockey Tournament continued, at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.
From the opening whistle in the feature clash between powerhouses Hikers “A” and Old Fort “A”, Hikers seemed to have the upper hand playing their usual patient passing game in contrast to Old Fort’s counter attacking style.
It took just three minutes for Hikers to gain their first penalty corner which was slotted in by Jerazeno Bell, off inspirational team-leader Timothy McIntosh.

Askofu Simon then scrambled in the equaliser for Old Fort in the 9th minute, but the celebration was short-lived, as Randy Hope tapped in a perfect pass from Bell one minute later to regain the lead for Hikers.
Aderemi Simon produced a dazzling run from deep in the defence, penetrating the entire Hikers team, before slipping a pass to brother Askofu who drove his shot into the open goal, taking his own and the team’s tally to 2.
Hikers, however, took control for the rest of the match, earning another goal through Alex Gouveia, before the half and then scored five more ahead of full time.
Bell added two more, while one each from Shane Samuels, Robert France and Renick Evelyn completed their tally.
The two other unbeaten teams in the men’s first division, GCC “A” and GCC “B” battled to a 1-1 stalemate.
The junior side surprised all by netting first through an Andrew Xavier penalty corner in the 12th minute. The contest remained scoreless for the next 20 minutes. However, constant pressure by the “A” side on their junior counterparts finally paid dividends and eventually secured the equaliser through a quick Dwayne Scott flick in the 33rd.
The GCC “A” unit pressed for the win, but tough defence by the “B” side, especially from left back Stuart Gonsalves saw time expire, before any further goals were scored.
Playing the final men’s “A” division match of the evening, the Nationals pulled off their first victory by hammering Western Dragons 5 – 2.
John Abrahams netted a double for the nationals, while Jason Dos Santos, Shane Samuels and Robert France, also entered the score-sheet. Trason Corbin and Selwyn Brant netted for the Dragons.
In the lone female match of the evening, Hikers ladies secured a comfortable victory over the youthful GCC Spartans by a 6– 4 margin.
The Spartans made it tough going against their more experienced opponents in the early going, but Hikers seemed always in control of the match never conceding the lead throughout.
Maria Munroe led the Hikers scoring a hat-trick which was supported by singles from newcomer Macaela Harding, Avonda James and Cora Towler.
Young Marzana Fiedtkou poured in a hat-trick of her own in the Spartans losing effort with the other coming off the stick of Briana Gordon.
