Regional series slated for
Jamaica from July 8 to August 6
The Guyana junior selection panel yesterday named a 26-man squad to contest a possible three, three-day trial matches before Guyana’s 14-man team to travel to Jamaica for this year’s regional Under-19 cricket series from July 8 to August 6 is named.
There was no surprise in the 26-man squad announced yesterday and the first trial match is scheduled to commence on Tuesday at a city venue once the weather permits.
The three-man panel of Michael Hyles Franco, Nazimul Drepaul and Faizul Bacchus picked the squad after watching the GTM three-day and one-day tournaments and Chairman Franco yesterday disclosed that the selectors were very disappointed with the quality of cricket they saw.
National Under-19 players Jonathon Foo, who dominated the inter-county series with both bat and ball after scoring the only century and taking a record 15-94 against Essequibo, heads the list of invitees which include his Guyana Under-19 teammates Seon Hetmyer, Royston Alkins, Trevon Griffith, Totaram Bishun, Anthony Bramble, Keon Joseph, Jeetendra Sookdeo and Keyron Fraser.
Joseph and Sookdeo both missed matches in the competition since they are recuperating from injury and Guyana Cricket Board President Chetram Singh disclosed that the medical reports of all players will be carefully monitored to prevent ‘not fully fit’ players going to Jamaica.
Ten players from Demerara have been selected including Guyana Under-17 opener Quincy Ovid-Richardson who was surprisingly left out of the Demerara team for their final round match against Berbice, while nine players from double GTM champions Berbice and seven from Essequibo make up the trial squad.
It was disclosed that left-arm spinner Trinson Carmichael was in the original squad but was omitted after he informed the selectors that he is migrating in the next two weeks.
Joseph, Fraser, Ronsford Beaton, Seon Daniels and Andre Stoll are the fast bowlers predictably selected, while Guyana Under-17 leg-spinner Amir Khan who was left out of the Demerara one-day team is also among those invited.
Former national Under-15 Skipper Harrinarine Chattergoon failed to find favour with the selectors after a disappointing series while Joemal LaFluer, Delon Fernandes and Ricardo Devers have also been left out after failing to reproduce the form that led to their Guyana under-17 selection last December.
Franco said 16-year-olds LaFleur, Devers and Fernandes are among the younger players with plenty of talent but they need to work harder on their cricket.
He feels that once they and the others who are eligible for next year’s tournament do this, they should be successful in the future.
GCB head, Singh, opined that the young players are not working hard enough on their personal cricket development or spending enough time improving their fitness and techniques since he feels that while the several coaches in Guyana could do more, the players must also show commitment to their development process. Alvin Johnson and Hubern Evans have been retained as Manager and Coach respectively.
Griffith will miss the first trail match since he was expected to leave Guyana today to represent DCC in the WIPA 20/20 tournament in Trinidad.
