Sixty-year-old Yvonne Edwards, called “Steel Donkey”, of West Ruimveldt Housing Scheme was yesterday granted $40,000 bail by Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson after she appeared in court, charged with unlawfully and maliciously wounding Shevon Marshall on April 11. Edwards, who was unrepresented, pleaded not guilty.
According to the defendant, on the day in question she was making cross buns at home when she realised that she needed to make a quick run to the market.
Edwards said that she went to the market to buy fruits when the virtual complainant asked her to buy a “black bag”.
The woman said that she ignored Marshall and continued about her business, when Marshall suddenly snatched her bag containing $336,000.
She said that after Marshall snatched her bag, she ran behind her. Edwards said that during the chase Marshall picked up a knife from the butcher and threw it at her and cutting her on the face. The woman stated that she was also attacked and assaulted by Marshall’s brothers.
“Your worship I have a medical showing all of this what these people do to me,” Edwards explained.
However this claim was refuted by Marshall’s mother. According to the woman, her daughter suffers from a psychiatric problem and she would usually go the market and pick up rice for the poultry that the family rears.
The mother stated that on the day in question her daughter, Shevon, had asked a stallholder for a black bag and he had refused to give her. She alleged that her daughter was beaten by the stall holder and the defendant.
According to the mother, the defendant stabbed her daughter four times about the body with a knife that she usually carries in her waist.
Edwards is expected to make another court appearance on May 25.
