Dear Editor,
It was History 200 under the Great Teacher Dr James Rose when my fellow colleague Wendy Martindale suddenly blurted out “thank God Christopher Columbus brought my grandparents to this part of the world.”
I being a warm blooded Afro Guyanese chided her for such a foolish statement, in fact, I went the full nine yards to tell her how asinine that statement was and that such words should never be uttered again.
Some 25 years have passed since Wendy’s prophetic pronouncement and boy was she correct oh yes she was. You see Wendy was referring to the decadence that is Africa, leaders who do not, or to use precise language would not demit office no matter how heavy a price the people pay.
Take a good look at Africa and you will see scores of power hungry despots Nkrumah, Gowon, Amin, Taylor, Mugabe all disgraceful people. I apologise to you Wendy, you were right, I am proud that Christopher Columbus did bring my foreparents to this part of the globe.
However, my joy is somewhat muted when I look at the behaviour of some Black Leaders, should I be more specific, those Black Leaders in the PNC’s camp. They do not know when their time is up or time to gracefully bow out and give leadership to someone else. From all the information we have received Robert Corbin is sick, very sick, but would he relinquish power and let another lead, a resounding no! Never! He, like his predecessors, Burnham and Hoyte, would rather die than give up power.
One would have thought that those Blacks who have been privileged to be graced with the luxuries of Western civilisation, the reality of giving up power or the allowance of succession would be an easy thing to do. Alas, this is not so, “Africa” is still in them and giving up power would be going against their DNA. So if there should ever be an announcement from Congress place that Robert Corbin is stepping down I would be very surprise because a miracle would have taken place. I believe in miracles do you?
