Dear Editor,
I have been following the level of violence in Guyana for some time now, and I have read some of your editorials where you have highlighted the high level of violence. Your comments and suggestions appear to fall on death ears and it seems that no one cares.
The recent killing of the security chief of Guyana Power and Light (GPL), have forced me to write in respect to the level of violence.
It appears that violence has manifested itself throughout the society and no one is immune. Furthermore, the recent killing of Naiomi Singh also shows that you are not even safe in your home.
We must be able to develop a comprehensive crime prevention strategy to halt the indiscriminate killing and a more proactive approach is needed in the fight against crime. I am therefore suggesting that we go back to the basic; that is we must follow the three crime prevention techniques which is as follows: social, situational and tertiary crime prevention. All three must work together in order to have success.
Social crime prevention should not be left up to government but should involve all facets of the private sector working with government in improving the lives of the citizens.
These include the creation of jobs for the poor and companies sponsoring certain activities within the neighbourhood.
This has proven very successful in many large countries especially in the UK and USA because you have given the people a voice not directly in the decision process; the people feel part of community.
Situational crime prevention involves the whole country this is where persons secure their homes either using electronic security and physical security measures such as iron bars at windows and doors, heavy duty locks and other physical measures. Most importantly the environmental designs of building are another important crime prevention measures and I strongly recommend this in the future when designing housing schemes and new commercial buildings.
Finally, tertiary crime prevention is where the courts are responsible for dispensing justice in a timely manner and the punishment must fit the crime.
It is important for the police and other agencies of the law to complete their investigation and prepare the necessary files for the DDP for the courts to proceed.
If this is done we will see a reduction in crime and the country will be at ease. No criminal like to be caught and they will do anything to keep their identity secret.
