Essequibo middle order batsman Navishaul Pooran hit a fine half century, as Wakenaam defeated Leguan by 121 runs, when the Banks DIH X-tra white 40-over cricket competition continued in Zone ‘B’ Essequibo recently.
Playing at White’s Park in Leguan, the home team won the toss and asked Wakenaam to bat first in a game, which was reduced to 30 overs, due to a wet pitch, caused by early morning showers.
Pooran hit 68 and got valuable support form Wazeer Mohamed 38, Roopnarine Persaud 26 and Wayne Osborne 25 were the other major contributors, as the visitors piled up 213 for 9 off their allotted overs.
Left arm spinner Trevor White (3-40), Ramesh Oudit (3-16) and Aseeb Khan (3-26) were the main wicket takers for Leguan, who in reply were bowled out for a paltry 92 in 21 overs.
Devon Rabindra with 27 was the only batsman that offered any resistance as 17-year-old left arm spinner Imran Khan bagged 5-26 and Roopnarine Persaud in a fiery spell took 2-20 for Wakenaam.
Meanwhile, in another game played recently, East Bank Essequibo defeated Wakenaam by 38 runs.
At the Wakenaam Community Centre Ground, East Bank batted first and recovered from a position of 45-5 to score 141 all out off 28 overs, after the game was reduced to 30 overs due to rain.
Trevor Benn top scored with 47 and national pacer Trevon Garraway contributed 22, as medium pacer Roopnarine Persaud bagged 5-30 and Olwin Paton 2-19.
Wakenaam in reply were all out for 103 in 25.1 overs. Wayne Osborne was the leading run-getter with 30 while Benn returned with the ball to take 3-11. Sase Narine (2-17) and Brian Hobert (2-23) also bowled well for the visitors.
