Coast guard rank Private Howard Willis, who was shot in the face while on duty, has regained consciousness but remains in a critical condition in the Georgetown Public Hospital’s Intensive Care Unit.
Willis, his face heavily bandaged, was unable to speak when his mother, Olive Willis, visited him yesterday. However, he appeared to be responding with gestures to her voice.
Mrs. Willis said that army officials have not provided her with any information about the mishap.
Her husband is scheduled to travel to Georgetown from the North West District today, and she is leaving it to him to communicate with the officials.
Private Willis, who is from Mabaruma, North West District, is the fourth of ten children. He has been in the army for two years.
According to reports, Willis, 21, was sitting in a chair at the Coast Guard headquarters in Ruimveldt on Saturday night, when a bullet was discharged from his rifle.
It is unclear whether the injury was accidental.
