Essequibo wicketkeeper batsman Wayne Osborne hit a fine 58 (4×6,5×4) and off spinner Nazeer Mohamed bagged 4-20 off 6.4 overs as Wakenaam defeated Cyril Potter College of Education by 6 runs in a feature 35-over match played last Saturday at the Wakenaam Community Centre Ground in Good Success.
Wakenaam who won the toss and elected to take first strike on a pitch with some moisture, in front of a fair sized crowd, were off to a brilliant start as Osborne and Navishaul Pooran posted 60 runs off 10 overs for the first wicket partnership, before Pooran was caught off Stephan Josiah for 28 (1×6,4×4).
The home team then found themselves in trouble as three more wickets fell in the space of 10 balls to leave the score at 70-4 off 14 overs.
Sampson then joined Osborne and the pair posted a 5th wicket partnership of 27 before Osborne departed. Sampson soon followed for 17, but Abdool Salim 19, Gurnauth Khemraj 18 and Jaggernauth Manbodh 14 not out, ensured Wakenaam reached 193 before they were all out in 32.4 overs.
Josiah, who hails from Wakenaam and plays for Noitgedacht Sports Club, ended with 4-32 while former Wakenaam Under-19 player Dillon Osborne took 3-3 and Parmeshwar Persaud 2-43 for the visitors.
CPCE in reply were off to a good start, as Timothy Cornelius (15) and Josiah (26) put together 30 runs off 8 overs, before they were both removed by Abdool Salim in quick succession leaving the score at 35-2.
The visitors then lost Videsh Ananadlall (02) and Winston Maynard (02) before Parmeshwar Persaud and Dillon Osborne joined forces and took the score to 120 in 20 overs.
Osborne was eventually run out for 28 which lasted for 44 balls and included one four and two sixes. No other batsman showed any resistance, as CPCE lost wickets at regular intervals to be 186-9 in 34 overs.
With 8 runs needed off the final over, top scorer Persaud, who made 43, was LBW to Mohamed off the fourth delivery to spark celebrations among the Wakenaam fans. Extras contributed 58 as CPCE ended on 187 all out in 34.4 overs. Salim supported Mohamed with 3-16.
