Although valiant efforts were made to save the life of 50-year-old Bibi Khalil who underwent triple bypass open heart surgery at the Caribbean Heart Institute (CHI) last Friday, the terribly sick woman succumbed on Monday.
Cardiac Surgeon Dr Gary Stephens who led the surgery said that Khalil had undergone a triple vessel bypass procedure which was relatively uneventful. However, the following day the woman remained in the Intensive Care Unit in a very unwell state, a situation which prompted the doctor to cancel his scheduled Sunday departure to further observe the patient whom he was hopeful would have got better.
“We have had patients that were very low after surgery and they eventually pulled through,” said an optimistic Dr Stephens.
But as fate would have it, Khalil passed away shortly after noon on Monday.
According to Dr Stephens during an interview with this newspaper, although it is tough to lose a patient there is still the need to reflect on the other patients who have been given a new lease on life because of the operation they were able to access at CHI.
“I know it is hard as well for the nurses.
They see a patient who comes in smiling and it is hard for them to accept that that person would not be leaving as they came,” Dr Stephens noted.
When Kaieteur News visited the 68 Second Street, Campbellville, Georgetown, home of the deceased, a modest gathering of relatives and friends congregated in preparation for a funeral service according to Muslim rites.
Another open heart operation which took the form of a Myxoma Resection was successfully conducted on Errol Smith by Dr Stephens on Saturday. That patient up to yesterday remained a patient of CHI.
