New kid on the block?!!!
Driving with the confidence and skill that characterised his elder brother Mark, Canada-based Paul Vieira took full advantage in the absence of Andrew King to emerge champion driver in Group 4 after winning all three races in yesterday’s Guyana Motor Racing & Sports Club season opening event at the South Dakota Circuit.
The soft-spoken member of the Vieira racing clan easily disposed of his opponents and must now be recognised as the new kid on the block, if he was not so identified before such a convincing performance.
Other solid performances came from Trinidad and Tobago’s Ravi Singh, who captured two races in Group 3, while Stephen Vieira and Christopher McLean crushed the opposition in the Super Bikes and 125cc motor cycles events respectively.
Also, producing a dominating performance was reigning go-kart champion Kristian Jeffrey, who survived some tough battles against his opponents in an exciting display.
The marquee Group 4 category which promised so much after Saturday’s qualifying sessions that saw King registering the fastest time to grab pole, was affected in the first of three races in the category when King blew his engine and had to retire for the day.
That left the door open for Vieira (Paul) to come through and he managed to do so in emphatic fashion as he raced to a comfortable win, beating his brother Mark and another Canada-based driver Shawn King in that order.
He then crushed them by about 8 lengths in the second race, but this time it was Keith Evelyn, who came through to squeeze out Mark for the second spot, while in the final race in the group, Vieira (Paul) after being engaged in the early segments of the race by King, Mark, Kem Lall and Gavin Gayadin, eventually left them in his wake to crown a successful day.
Meanwhile, Stephen Vieira riding his new 2008 Suzuki GSX-R 600cc motorbike was clinical in his destruction of his opponents and raced to easy victories, while McLean was equally efficient in his demolition of the smaller category.
T&T’s Singh drove two impressive races, before a determined Lall and Ryan Rahaman produced a remarkable battle to ensure that he did not sweep the division.
