With the uncertain weather being currently experienced, the Guyana Hockey Board has moved to the indoor arena of the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall for their season opener.
The Mr. Toppers Indoor Hockey Championships is now set to open the delayed 2009 season today and continue on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays for the next two weeks.
Two male categories are being contested with one female division, which will feature many of the national players currently in training for the upcoming Pan American Hockey Federation’s Caribbean Cup.
The exciting men’s A division will see regional powerhouses Hikers, with stalwarts Jerazeno ‘Skill axe’ Bell and Devin Munroe, challenged once again by Dwayne Scott and the reigning indoor champions GCC and 2007 champions Old Fort with the phenomenal Aderemi Simon at the helm.
This year however, the National squad will be entering their own side, which although comprising players selected for the outdoor version of the game is likely to be the team to beat. Rounding out the A division are Western Dragons of Uitvlugt and GCC B selection.
A national selection, known as the Piranhas, will also similarly be contesting the ladies division, but will have their hands full to match Captain Sonia Jardine and her powerful GCC Tigers who swept the 2008 indoor season including an impressive victory against the visiting GOA Reds in November. The Hikers ladies and GCC Spartans are the other sides participating.
The men’s junior competition will feature promising youngsters Hikers B just back from competing in the Easter Festival in Trinidad, along with Old Fort B, Western Dragons B and the Carib Degenerates.
Hikers B clash with Old Fort B in the opening match at 18:00hrs this evening while the Carib Degenerates take on the Western Dragons B in the other men’s B division match of the night. In the men’s A division, Old Fort A face the GCC B, GCC A challenge Western Dragons and Hikers A face off against the Nationals.
Two matches will also be contested in the ladies division with GCC Tigers taking on Piranhas and Hikers clashing with GCC Spartans.
