The nation’s top race walkers will compete for honours, when the Cavaliers Sports and Tour Club (CSTC) stage a 10-lap race walk around the inner circuit of the National Park tomorrow morning.
The event, which commemorates the arrival of Indians to Guyana, will feature the cream of the nation’s walkers and Rudolph Mitchell, on an unbeaten streak in his 87 previous races would fancy his chances of notching up his 88th victory. The going may not be that easy since he will have to overcome challenges from the likes of Jonathon Fagundes and O’Neil Joseph, his two most ardent adversaries.
The last time these three competed against each other in the ‘Dawn of a New Era’ 6 laps race around the inner circuit of the National Park, Rudolph Mitchell barely nosed ahead of Fagundes with a time of 55minutes 38 seconds. Fagundes had crossed the finishing line a mere 3 seconds later at 55 minutes 41 seconds, while Joseph sealed the final podium spot in 57 minutes 31 seconds.
Junior walker, Malcolm Harry who, only last Sunday, triumphed in the 7 laps junior race walk around the Timerhi Circuit, will be out to prove that his victory was no fluke. He will have to contend with the likes of Brian Rodney and Ivelaw Charles, who he beat into second and third place respectively in their last encounter.
The veterans will also compete against each other and all eyes would be on Maurice Fagundes who has been showing great improvement over the last few races.
Winners in the various categories will receive trophies and other attractive prizes donated by several corporate entities.
Race walkers are reminded that starting time is 6:30hrs and the organisers are asking that they assemble for a prompt start to the proceedings.
