Hosts, East Coast Demerara dominated both male and female events to come out as the champions of the 2009 Linwest Games organised by the Athletics Association of Guyana, coordinated by Ms. Mayfield Trim and sponsored by the New Guyana Sports Development Association of New York (NGSANY).
In cool, overcast conditions at the Enmore Community Centre ground on Saturday, East Coast tallied 388 points to win ahead of Linden (345), West Demerara (301), East Berbice (208), East Bank Demerara (198) and West Berbice bringing up the rear on 94 points.
The Linwest Games which originated in West Demerara saw for the first time, participation from East and West Berbice.
In the female events, track and field, East Demerara totaled 215, Linden 188, West
Demerara 132 piping East Bank Demerara by a single point, East and West Berbice 75 and 45 points respectively.
The host’s also ruled the roost among the male athletes accumulating 173 points, West Demerara 169, Linden 157, East Berbice 133, East Bank Demerara 67 and West Berbice 49. Athletes competed against each other in the under-13, 15, 17 and 20 age groups.
The leading under-13 competitors were Linden’s Roylyn Rollins among the girls and East Coast’s Jason Yaw for boys.
Rollins copped first places in the long jump (4.14m); 1500m (3:34.00), javelin (18.02m) and placed 2nd in the 80m dash (11.30). Yaw won the long jump (4.75m), 80m dash (10.80), javelin (30.56) and 4th in the 1500m (6:03.60).
Other under-13 winners were Ayeshia Kendall (East Coast) 80m dash (11.20) and Shaqueil Marshall (East Coast) 1500m (4:14.70).
Tying for the top spot among the under-15 boys were East Berbice’ Kelvin Broomes and West Demerara’s Kevin Paul.
Broomes chalked up victories in the javelin (28.90m); long jump (5.33m);
Paul recorded wins in the 1500m (5:15.50), 800m (2:27.30);
Top under-15 girl was Toshawnna Doris who topped the field in the 1500m (5:58.40), 800m (2:53.50)
Other under-15 winners, Onescia Byass (Linden) javelin (4:32.00), Déjà Smartt (East Coast) 100m (12.70), 200m (27.10); Laniece Dennis (Linden) long jump (4.58m); Alvin Garnett (East Berbice) 200m (25.50), Kimberly Marshall (East Coast) 400m (1:07.70), Pernal Perry (East Coast) 100m12.20) and Calvin Belgrave (East Coast) 400m (57.30).
The overall male and female under-17 winners were Chavez Ajeday (East Coast) and Lisa Bowman of East Bank. Ajeday produced wins in the 100m (11.10), 200m (23.10), Bowman shot put (9.47m), javelin (31.18m), discuss (21.56m),

Boys: Delon Grandison (West Demerara) 1500m (4:38.80); Marlon Moshett (Linden) long jump (6.30m); Brentnol Hoyte (Linden) shot put (11.20m), discuss (31.16m), javelin (24.22m); Leary Campbell (East Berbice) 800m (2:11.10); Chavez Sital (East Coast) 3000m (10:18.80) and Marlon Moshett (Linden) 400m (53.30).
The leading under-20 male and female were, Winston Caesar and Roxanne Rigby (East Berbice). Caesar took the long jump (6.76m), 2nd in the 100m (11.30) & 200m (23.90). Rigby dominated the long jump (4.72m), 100m (12.70), 200m (27.10), Other winners in this division, male: Tyshon Bentick (Linden) 1500m (4:32.00), 800m (2:11.90); Okeme Stewart (East Berbice) 100m (10.90), 200m (23.40) and Michael Bowman (West Demerara) javelin (44.04).
Female: Kimberly Doris (East Bank) shot put (8.10m), Alika Morgan (East Bank) 1500m (5:18.10), 3000m open (11:01.60); Tenneisha Smith (Linden) javelin (20.40m), discuss (22.70) and Ronella Goring (East Coast) 400m (1: 12.30).
Placing first in the girl’s 4x100m open relay was East Berbice ahead of West Demerara and East Coast. Claiming the top spot among the males was East Berbice followed by Linden and West Demerara.
Scorching to victory in the male and female 4x400m open rely was East Berbice and East Coast respectively. Winning the female invitational 100m dash was Alisha Fortune with Kenneth Semple topping the field in the male clash.
