Senior National Champion, Kriskal Persaud amassed 4 1/2 points to assume the lead at the end of the fifth round on day two of the DDL Topco Independence chess tournament at the Keishar’s Sports Club, Hadfield Street, Georgetown, Friday afternoon last.
His only blemish to an otherwise successful day occurred when he was held to a draw by the seasoned, David Khan in round two.
Persaud triumphed over former Barbadian Junior Champion Wendell Meusa, in a highly anticipated matchup, also on day two. Another match that was of vast interest saw Neil Khan defeating President of the Guyana Chess Federation Errol Tiwari, while Alexander Duncan defeated Shiv Nandalall.
Tournament Director, Irshad Mohamed played the game of his life to secure a draw over the more seasoned David Khan.
The points standing after five rounds reads: Wendell Meusa, Loris Nathoo and Neil Khan (4 points apiece), Learie Webster (three and a half points), Errol Tiwari, Alexander Duncan, Omar Shariff, Shiv Nandalall and Irshad Mohamed (3 points each), Brian Thompson and Michael Perriera (two and a half points each), Michael Cleghorne, Kenrick Brathwaite, Dennis Dillon and Raymond Sookdeo (two points apiece) while Corney Gill and Ryan Singh ended in the cellar on one point apiece.
Sham Khan leads the points standing in the junior category with four points, closely followed by Devendra Singh (3 points).
In one of the highlighted match of the day in this category, young Denzel Dillon, son of Dennis Dillon upset his stronger counterpart Crystal Khan. Commenting on the experience moments after the game, Khan said she underestimated her opponent which eventually cost her the game. The current points standing after five rounds reads: Sham Khan four, Devendra Singh, Rashad Hussain, Keron Simon and Crystal Khan on three apiece, Saeed Ali, Kana Khan and Sheriffa Ali on two points, Aslam Hussain, Denzel Dillon, Leah Shariff and Carlos Griffith on one point apiece.
Meanwhile, the performance of 24 years old Guyanese and former National Junior U-20 Barbados Chess champion, Wendell Meusa, was the highlight of the first day when the curtains went up on the tournament.
Meusa, who resides in ‘The Land of the Flying Fish’ but returned on a holiday, opposed Loris Nathoo in a game that required most of the allotted time to complete. He eventually outwitted his opponent and successfully triumphed in the fiercely contested duel, notching up his first point in the tournament.
On day one, also, David Khan was the first to register a point when he outplayed Ryan Singh. Denis Dillon then disposed of Kishan Singh to join the club, shortly before Corney Gill triumphed over Irshad Mohamed. National champion, Kriskal Persaud also earned a point after his victory over Neil Khan, while Learie Webster and Michael Pereira battled to a draw.
They both received half of a point. Errol Tiwari disposed of Errol Cleghorne and he also chalked up a point.
Shiv Nandalall outplayed Sally Hardeo, the lone female to contest, while Raymond Sookdeo triumphed over Kenrick Braithwaite. Both winners also ended day one on one point apiece. Brian Thompson was also awarded a point after his opponent, Chino Chung failed to show up thus conceding a walk over.
The tournament continues this Tuesday May 5 from 10:00am at the Keishar’s Sport Club on Camp and Hadfield Street. The tournament is sponsored exclusively by DDL under the Topco juice brand.
