A number of the teams involved in this year’s Ministry of Culture Youth and Sport Inter-Block football tournament will assist in the national blood donation drive.
This disclosure was made by Parliamentary Secretary in that ministry, Steve Ninvalle. He informed that a total of 25 areas are down to compete in this year’s event with each fielding a minimum of four teams which would see a target of 100 pints of blood being realised.
Being aware of the need for blood at the blood bank based on several public appeals and other donations made by several entities, Ninvalle made the request to the various areas and the players readily agreed to support this worthy venture, which was noted saves lives.
Ninvalle noted that it was a healthy was of giving back to the society and this also shows that sport is being looked at seriously.
Beterverwagting (BV) is the first area that has embraced the venture and many players have expressed eagerness to join the blood drive. The PS informed that good responses were received from Victoria, Golden Grove, Ann’s Grove and Timehri (which has the largest amount of teams, 12). Some of the other areas have not yet been contacted.
The actual start of the donation has not been finalised, however Ninvalle is in contact with Health Minister Dr. Leslie Ramsammy and several officials of the Blood Bank and the logistics are in the process of being worked out. However, it is hoped that the actual donation will commence next week.
Dr. Ramsammy has thrown his full support behind the programme, which has brought much commendation from officials of the Blood Bank.
Ninvalle also noted that the Inter-Block Basketball tournament has been set for July and these players are also scheduled to join this effort.
