Assad Fudadin hit a sparkling 85 off 60 balls to lead New Line Cavaliers to a thrilling three-wicket win against Gizmos & Gadgets Pitbulls in the final of the DJ Stress Twenty/20 competition which was played on Friday, at the Guyana National Stadium.
Cavaliers needed 152 to win after restricting Pitbulls to 151-7 and they got there off the final delivery of the match, closing on 152-7.
Played before a large crowd, Fudadin cracked 7 glorious fours and 4 maximums in an entertaining knock which ended when he was run out by the energetic Christopher Barnwell.
Barnwell, who was delegated to bowl the final over, made a magnificent stop from a firm drive by Fudadin off the penultimate delivery of the match and was able to run back and break the stumps with the batsman well short of his ground attempting to scamper a single.
Fudadin’s dismissal left Cavaliers needing two runs from the last ball faced by Chidn Gittens and they were handed victory when Barnwell tried a slower delivery, but ended up instead spraying the ball down the leg-side to be called a wide and spark wild celebrations from the Cavaliers fans and team tent.
It was a fitting climax to a day of good entertainment backed up by splendid cricket that seems set to become an annual event.
Gittens was left not out on 19, while the batsman with him was Balram Samaroo on 0.
Deon Ferrier was the best bowler on show for Pitbulls, taking 2-19.
Earlier, Pitbulls were led to a challenging total through another belligerent knock from opener Barnwell, who blasted a rapid 42 with 3 fours and 2 sixes, while other useful contributions came from wicketkeeper Derwin Christian 27 with a boundary and a six and Leon Johnson 18.
Former Guyana middle-order batsman Andre Percival grabbed 3-17 from 4 overs, while another former national player leg-spinner Mahendra Nagamootoo, though somewhat expensive, picked up 2-40 off 4.
Fudadin was later named Player-of-the- Series along with receiving the man-of-the-match award, while Barnwell copped the highest aggregate of runs accolade including a century off 58 balls.
In semi-final action, Cavaliers got to the final with an easy 7 wickets triumph over Igloo Jaguars, while Pitbulls scored a crushing 81 runs win over East Coast Power Stout.
The competition was sponsored by GT&T Cellink, Gizmos & Gadgets, Banks DIH, Rockaway Auto Sales & Bicycle Store, Jai Signs, Digicom and Trophy Stall.
