Police and army ranks are hunting a suspect in the murder of 20-year-old bride-to-be, Naiomi Singh, whose body, with throat slit, was found behind her parent’s home at Morashi, East Bank Essequibo on Friday night.
It is believed that an intruder attacked Singh, who was scheduled to marry next month, while she was speaking with her fiancé on a mobile phone. Singh was at home alone at the time.
It is believed that the killer dragged Singh through a back gate, where she was then slain and dumped in a shallow trench located a few yards from the house.
Relatives have ruled out robbery since Naiomi was still wearing two gold rings, gold earrings, and a silver band and chain when her body was found. Nothing was missing from the home or from the small shop the family operates.
Mohan Singh, the victim’s father, said that the area where the body was found was trampled, leading him to surmise that his daughter had put up a fight with her attacker.
Another relative told Kaieteur News that detectives recovered a shirt, with what appeared to be spots of blood, under the victim’s house. A pair of slippers was also reportedly found near the crime scene.
Kaieteur News understands that police are looking for a Morashi labourer who lives a short distance from the Singhs.
The suspect reportedly disappeared yesterday morning after being informed that he was wanted at the Parika Police Station for questioning.
Mohan Singh, a farmer, told Kaieteur News that he last saw his daughter alive at around 15:30 hrs on Friday, when he left home to bring his farm produce to Georgetown to sell. At the time, Singh’s wife and other children were out and only Naiomi was at home.
Mr. Singh said that he returned home at around 18:45 hrs in the company of an employee. He said that the radio was on but there was no sign of his daughter. The farmer said that he had left his cell phone at home and shortly after, Naiomi’s fiancé called to enquire about her whereabouts.
According to Mr. Singh, the fiancé stated that he was speaking to Naiomi at around 17:45 hrs on Friday when she suddenly stated that someone was in the yard. Shortly after, the phone Naiomi was using suddenly went dead, and, despite repeated attempts, the fiancé was reportedly unable to contact her again.
Mr. Singh said that he became concerned for his daughter’s safety and he and the employee began to search for the missing girl.
Eventually, at around 21:00 hrs, the search party went through an unlocked gate in the backyard, where, by the light of his torch, Mr. Singh eventually found his daughter’s body in a shallow trench a few yards from the property. He recalled that his daughter was wearing a skirt and blouse. The skirt was upraised but Mr. Singh was unable to say whether the underwear was intact.
Singh also said the area where the body was found was badly trampled.
Naiomi’s fiancé has given detectives at the Parika Police Station a statement and Mr. Singh said that police verified his alibi after checking the man’s cell phone. Asked about any possible enemies his daughter may have had, the farmer alleged that an ex-girlfriend of her fiancé had made threatening phone calls to Naiomi about six months ago. Kaieteur News was told that Mr. Singh filed a complaint with the police and the ex-girlfriend was cautioned.
Another relative said that the labourer who is now a suspect had assisted briefly on Friday night in the search for Naiomi. However, they said he left after a few minutes, and returned briefly when the body was found.
According to the relative, the suspect was seen on his bridge yesterday morning. However, he reportedly disappeared when the police arrived. The relatives have reportedly been unable to account for his whereabouts. However, Naiomi Singh’s relatives believe that the suspect is hiding out nearby, since he can only leave the area by boat. Yesterday afternoon, army ranks from Fort Island were assisting villagers in scouring the area for the suspect.
