Sugar workers from the Uitvlugt Estate were on Sunday given house lots in Zeelugt, East Bank Essequibo by the Sugar Industry Labour Welfare Fund Committee.
Minister of Housing and Water, Irfaan Ali, who was present during the distribution at Uitvlugt Community Centre, said that the new housing schemes are putting a strain on the present wells and as such new wells are to be drilled in Region Three.
He added that potable water is being subsidised and that his Ministry will continue to explore ways and means to improve on the quality and flow of water to Guyanese.
The Minister said that more than 100 sugar workers were interviewed and those who were shortlisted should consider themselves privileged. He advised them to ensure that they construct their houses within the time frame granted.
The Minister also said that the sugar welfare committee and his Ministry are subsidising the cost of the house lots for which the sugar workers are asked to pay $90,000.
He also advised the workers to safeguard the infrastructure.
Minister of Labour, Manzoor Nadir, who was also present at the handing over, said that the event marked the beginning of Labour Week.
The allocation, he added, comes at a time when workers would be celebrating their achievements together.
He advised that the workers take full advantage of the benefits offered by the Committee and should therefore access the loans, which are interest free.
