News travels quickly around Guyana and the recent boasts by Cecil Smith that he will knock out Cassius Matthews in their six-round lightweight fight scheduled for next Tuesday at the Mackenzie Sports Club Ground, has reached the ears of the latter boxer at his Linden base and he has, in turn, sent a missive to his opponent.
Another Lindener, Sharon Warde, has also dispatched a caveat to Debbie Tyson that she would receive a sound thrashing in their encounter.
Kaieteur News caught up with Matthews, hours after he had completed a few miles of stiff roadwork in the hilly terrain of Linden.
He said that he is aware of the boastful utterances of Smith but is hardly worried. “I accepted this bout on short notice because I am extremely confident that I can beat Smith,” Matthews said.
He explained that he and Smith were both a part of the 1995 Carifta squad in Jamaica. However, they fought in different weight categories. Matthews said that during training sessions he would do a number on the younger Smith.
Furthermore, he pointed out that Smith fought as a lightweight and won a silver medal while he procured gold as a junior welterweight. “So you see, I am the more senior and that fact will be highlighted come fight night,” Matthews stressed.
On the other hand, Smith has promised to utilize his skill, which he claims exceeds those of Matthews, to demolish his opponent.
He made these boasts at a press conference convened by the promoter at the Upscale Restaurant and Bar, earlier in the week.
Meanwhile, Lindeners are anticipating the exhibition match-up between heavyweights, ‘Big Bad’ Shawn Harris and Fahaad ‘The Little Giant’ Ali. The two are scheduled to clash in a four-round exhibition match that promises the winner a healthy purse plus bragging rights.
Dubbed the ‘Battle of the Giants’ this fight has caught the imagination of boxing buffs. Furthermore, both fighters are expected to tip the scales at over three hundred pounds and the promoter has disclosed that they have been categorized in the Super Super-Heavyweight division.
The main bout also promises much action as Mark Murray, just back from a victory in Barbados opposes world rated Leon ‘Hurry Up’ Moore in an 8-round catchweight affair. Lindener Sharon Warde and Debbie Tyson will also match gloves over four rounds.
Tyson knocked out another Lindener, Avlon Scotland, in the recently promoted S&S Promotions card.
Warde has since promised to avenge the loss.
As if those bouts are not enough to whet the appetites of boxing buffs in the mining town, the promoter has also arranged a catchweight bout between Cloyd William and Shawn Corbin over 6 rounds while Mitchell Rogers and Anthony Augustus square off in a 6-round light-heavyweight affair.
The weigh-ins will be conducted at the Lifetime Gift Shop, Republic Avenue, Linden on Monday. Fight time is 20:00hrs.
