– event promises to be bigger than ever
By Edison Jefford
“Preparations are well on the way for the Inter–Ward competition. The Wards are awfully busy preparing and we anticipate a very good tournament,” Robert Cadogan told Kaieteur Sport Thursday in an exclusive interview on the event.
The annual and usually much anticipated Inter-Ward basketball competition returns to the Georgetown Amateur Basketball Association (GABA) calendar next weekend following stringent preparations from the organising committee.
“It is good that it is coming at this time to help restore some fans to basketball. It is amid the marquee tournaments in the country and I am glad that we were able to facilitate the event under the new GABA leadership,” Cadogan said.
The Georgetown Inter–Ward contest had disappeared from the GABA calendar under the Chris Bowman led administration but has returned on the new President, Trevor Rose’s ticket that promised more tournaments for players.
Georgetown is currently in one of its best basketball season where the proliferation of the sport is obvious.
Rose was elected in September last year and there has been a basketball activity every month since he took the oath to office.
“Our players just want to play basketball and we are making that possible for them. That is one of the only ways that we will progress against our counterparts,” Cadogan, who is also the GABA General Secretary, told this newspaper.
The Inter–Ward event has been able to secure sponsorship from Hits and Jams Television and Lens Craft Optical. According to Cadogan, other sponsors have promised to support the marquee basketball event scheduled to jump off May 9.
“The players should enjoy the competition. The sport needs this to keep our momentum right now. The beautiful thing about this tournament is that it is not a club thing anymore since various clubs make up the wards,” Cadogan observed.
Georgetown was divided into 16 wards including defending champions, North Ruimveldt, South Ruimveldt, East/West Ruimveldt, Albouystown/Charlestown, Kitty/Campbellville, Alpha/Bourda and Tucville/Guyhoc.
Wortmanville/Werk-en-Rust, Plaisance, Beterverwagting/Melanie, McDoom/Houston, Agricola/Bagotstown Republic Park/Mocha, Prospect/Grove, Supply/Soesdyke and Lodge/Meadowbrook are the other wards.
Darcel Harris is the contact person for North; Kelvin Simon for South; William D’Aguiar for East; Trevor McLeod for Albouystown; Trevor Rose for Kitty; Derek Alphonso for Bourda and Joel Loncke for Tucville district.
Other contacts include Naylon Loncke for Wortmanville, Stephon Gillis for Plaisance; Kayode Murray for Melanie; Travis Burnette for McDoom; Kwesi Roberts for Agricola; Hodayah Stewart for Republic Park; Mark Richards for Grove; Vivian Alder for Supply and Orin Sandiford for Lodge.
