As the Guyana Amateur Swimming Association (GASA) continues its bid to develop and build the sport, the association in conjunction with the world governing body FINA commenced a 10-day coaches’ seminar yesterday at the Guyana Olympic Association Headquarters, Church & Peter Rose Streets, Queenstown.
Association President Phillip Walcott said the programme is designed to improve the knowledge base and capability of coaches which will translate into improved performances of swimmers.
Walcott acknowledged that the challenges are significant, but despite this he is of the belief that Guyana can eventually be a force to reckon with against the likes of regional powerhouses Trinidad and Tobago and Suriname, who just won the Inter Guiana Games swimming title, last weekend. T&T regained top spot at the recent Junior Carifta Games.
It was reported that construction of the Olympic-size pool is expected to restart sometime in the new week – good news for the swimming fraternity and Guyana as a whole.
“We expect that seminars such as these and the improvement of facilities will ultimately translate into enhancement of our athlete’s times. Our swimmers have been improving in this regard and that is a very commendable achievement for our coaches who have been operating against significant disadvantages.
Disadvantages in terms of the pool time we have available and the quality of facilities, but yet they have been able to gradually work and improve the times of our swimmers which would indicate that natural talent is available to us.”
Walcott shared the view that if we can harness that talent by improving our technical capabilities via upgrading our knowledge with seminars of this nature, we will be on our way to being much more competitive.
“I want to commend FINA for assisting us with this seminar and to particularly thank Gerd for being back with us. I want to encourage you the participants to be focused, learn and assimilate as much as you can.”
Facilitator, Gerd Nottlemann of Germany who was here last year conducting another course, expressed his delight at being back to assist with the continued development of the sport.
The 64 year-old Nottlemann, himself a former swimmer in the 1960s and ‘70s has been in the coaching business for over 30 years.
He disclosed that sessions for the 15 participants will be theoretical and practical, with viewing and analysis of various videos.
Some of the other areas the coaches will be exposed to include: the macro/micro cycle; energy systems; training & training methods; physical conditioning; loading adaptation; general endurance, specific endurance; endurance training effects and conditioning fitness capability among others.
