Digicel invests $3M in lights along Amelia’s Ward Highway

Digicel has invested $3M in lights along the Amelia’s Ward Linden Highway in an attempt to improve road safety along that stretch of highway. The area has been the location of many fatal accidents over the years.
The Amelia’s Ward area is highly populated and the one-mile of lights provides sufficient coverage on both sides of the highway to ensure the safety of motorists as well as pedestrians and residents of the community.
During the official switching on of the lights, yesterday, Digicel Guyana Chief Executive Officer, Gregory Dean, said, “For the past few years Digicel has observed that several fatal accidents have occurred along the linden highway and very often it is a result of the non existence of lights along the highway.
“In the interest of protecting citizens, we took the initiative to install lights along the highway.
It was certainly not an easy task but we were committed to completing the project and today we will finally get a chance to switch on thirteen lights along this area.”
This project began in mid April and electrical engineers were able complete the project in time for the May Day launch.
Prime Minister, Samuel Hinds, lauded Digicel for undertaking the project.
Residents of Amelia’s Ward and visitors to Linden Town Week took the opportunity to celebrate the switching on of the lights with Digicel.
The company’s cake cutting ceremony, which has become part of Digicel’s Linden Town Week celebration, was done at the site. Apart from the Lights Project, Digicel has also contributed over $3M towards the Linden Town Week activities.
